A member of the British Armed Forces has been killed in a “tragic accident” in Ukraine, the Ministry of Defence has said.
The incident occurred during a test of Ukrainian defensive capabilities away from the front line.
It is understood that the death was not as a result of hostile fire, British defence sources have said.
The UK has previously acknowledged the presence of a small number of British personnel in Ukraine providing security to the UK’s diplomatic presence and supporting Ukraine’s armed forces .
An MoD spokesman said: “It is with deep regret that we must announce that a member of the UK Armed Forces died in Ukraine this morning, Tuesday Dec 9.
“He was injured in a tragic accident whilst observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability, away from the front lines.
“The family has been notified and our thoughts are with them at this sad and difficult time.”
Sir Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister, paid tribute on Monday evening, saying: “My deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of the member of our Armed Forces who sadly lost their life today.
“Their service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
John Healey, the Defence Secretary, said he was “devastated” by the death, adding: “My thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues as they grieve for a loved one.
“Our hearts go out to them.”
James Cartlidge, the shadow defence secretary, said: “I am deeply saddened to hear the tragic news that a member of the UK Armed Forces died this morning in Ukraine.”
“My sincere condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time.”
The death is the first official British military casualty in Ukraine, defence sources on Tuesday night confirmed.
It is unclear whether the man was serving in the British Army, RAF or Royal Navy, with the Ministry of Defence refusing to provide more details. A defence source confirmed there were no other British casualties.
It is has not been disclosed where in Ukraine the accident took place and whether any Ukrainian personnel were also injured.
At least 40 British citizens are thought to have died fighting for Ukraine against Russia since Vladimir Putin launched his full-scale invasion of the country in 2022.
